Undulatus Asperatus Sunset (4K, 8K) from Mike Olbinski on Vimeo.

All spring I chase storms across the United States to collect footage of supercells, lightning, tornadoes and whatever I might find. Generally I don’t release any time-lapse clips from those chases until I put out my final end of season compilation film. But last night in North Dakota was too unreal to let sit on my hard drive for months.

We were chasing northeast of Bismarck, North Dakota and as storms were dying out, we decided to go for a lone cell on the backside of a line of storms. We knew it had a hail core on it and we were hoping that we might get some nice sunset color at least on the storm as it moved past us, and hopefully some lightning bolts. But we had no idea what we were about to encounter. The clouds were taking on a very different, curvy, wave-like appearance and suddenly we knew what we were seeing.

Undulatus asperatus clouds are a rare phenomenon and actually the newest named cloud type in over 60 years. I’ve seen tons of photos of them, but never anything like what we witnessed last night. We had a storm with hail in front of us and flashing lightning which was fantastic. But then we had this layer of undulatus clouds flowing across our view. Watching them was amazing already, but then the sun slowly appeared from behind some clouds to the west and lit up our storm like nothing we’ve ever seen before. We were like kids in a candy store. Running around, doing our best to capture it from every possible angle.

I did two time-lapses…one on the right side with a 50mm and then a wide angle with the 11mm. The colors here are real. I only increased the contrast. In fact, I was thinking of actually REDUCING the saturation because of how intense the colors looked with the contrast added. But that’s how it was and I left it that way. Six of us were there and all our photo and videos look the same.

This was undoubtedly one of the most incredible scenes I’ve witnessed chasing storms for the past 8 years.

Music: Breathe by Ex Makina: youtube.com/channel/UCWoytIkqnWOVM3d6fw0XMxQ
    ——-

The moment I heard the opening thump of bass…I knew I would be using this song for my film. But then those haunting vocals hit my ears…and blew my mind. It was like a punch deep in my soul. It’s hard to explain that feeling when you first hear a song and you immediately fall in love with it. Almost like you’ve known it all along.

I hadn’t even planned to start working on this film yet, but I was so inspired that I furiously began to lay down time-lapse clips. I couldn’t stop pouring over it. It was last September and I was supposed to be working on Monsoon IV, but I forgot all about it once I heard Ex Makina’s “Breathe." It almost felt like it was made for a black and white storm film.

About halfway through editing, I knew the song title would be my film title as well. It was so perfect I couldn’t believe it. Sometimes for me…when I’m chasing or watching an amazing storm…I’ll realize I haven’t taken a breath in awhile. Never really thought of it until I heard this song.

I love being inspired by other artists. I love soundtracks. I can’t imagine the movie Interstellar without that powerful pipe organ soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Music is so important to what I do and I’m so incredibly thankful to husband/wife duo Iain and Rebecca Campbell for writing this amazing song. Thanks to the MusicBed as well for having such fantastic musicians and artists.

In early 2017, I put together a film called Pulse that was my first ever black and white time-lapse movie. It was so different and fun, I wanted to do a follow-up this year before the next chase season begins. Breathe is made up solely of storm clips from 2017…either from the spring across the central plains or from the monsoon here in the southwest. Some are favorites, some are just ones I knew would be amazing in monochrome and others I used because they fit the music so well.  I also went with a wider aspect ratio on these films to give it more of a cinematic feel.

This is also the first film I’ve ever done in full 8K resolution. I’m super excited about that. You may not be able to watch it in that resolution, but it’s there if you can. Otherwise, 4K is a must if you can!

I truly hope you enjoy this. For me, I needed something to pass the time and bridge the next few months as I wait for supercells to return to the plains. But honestly, I truly love putting these together. Thanks for all your support in the past and feel free to share!

    Technical Details:

I used two Canon 5DSR’s along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

UNSATISFYING from PARALLEL STUDIO on Vimeo.

During the summer of 2016, We created and directed a video about unsatisfying situations: the frustrating, annoying, disappointing little things of everyday life, that are so painful to live or even to watch.

We quickly realized that there are a lot of other situations that would be fun to see animated, so we decided to run an animation challenge around this idea.

“Quit Your Day Job” Crowdfunding Video from MAHFIA.TV on Vimeo.

We are so close to finishing the film! But we have some huge costs left to get the film ready for digital download and DVD production. We need to pay for post production costs including music rights, sound mixing and color correction. One song alone can cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Our target goal is to fundraise $10,000 to cover these costs.

Help us finish the film by supportingour crowdfunding campaign: igg.me/at/quityourdayjobfilm

“Quit Your Day Job” is the first full length girls skateboarding film to be produced in the US in over a decade. Created by skaters and filmmakers Erik Sandoval and Monique O'Toole, the project started in January of 2014 as a short skate edit. The desire, demand and need for a full length girls skate film became a reality as Erik and Monique met girls from all over the country whose talents deserved to be showcased. This film will change people’s perception of what females are capable of and inspire a new world of possibility for the next generation of women.

The film will showcase the most progressive street skating from the top female skateboarders in the world and also introduce many up and coming skaters that you haven’t heard of yet.

Including: Vanessa Torres, Lacey Baker, Samarria Brevard, Candy Jacobs, Nika Washington, Mariah Duran, Annie Guglia, and Savannah Headden, Amanda Castillo, Chryssie Banfell, Kat Sy, and Courtney Akita, Chelsea Castro, Meagan Guy, Christiana Smith, Minna Stess, Roxzi Bokolas, Jordan Serpentini, Elo Jett, Maddie Collins, Die Hu, Eleanor Bowyer, Kelly Green, Kiana Parra, Noelia Velez, Ali Stevens, Marissa Martinez, Brighton Zeuner, Poppy Starr Olsen, Bryce Wettstein, Sierra Kerr, Nicole Hause, Andrea Bethke, Izy Mutu, Shanae Collins, Hanna Zanzi, Fabiana Delfino, Mimi Knoop, Kristin Ebeling, Jordyn Barratt, and Lenna Chrisala.

ADCN | Craft Leader from Ambassadors on Vimeo.

For the second time in a row ADCN approached us to create visuals for the annual ADCN Awards. This year we wanted to make it extra special because of the 50th anniversary so we collaborated with our friends at PlusOne Amsterdam and Woodwork. Together we created over 80 visuals, ranging from winner announcements, a nominations film and other unique visuals.

Individually we all created a category leader inspired by this years theme of Blood, Sweat & Cheers and based on the ADCN brand identity colours.

We created the Craft category leader, a montage of the Blood, Sweat & Cheers of artists working in Advertising, Design & Craft.
